Mweka Camp serves as the final overnight resting point for most climbers descending from the summit via the Mweka Route. After the grueling trek to Uhuru Peak and the steep descent through the scree fields, arriving at Mweka Camp feels like a return to life. The camp is situated at the upper edge of the giant heather zone, where the stark, rocky alpine desert transitions back into lush, oxygen-rich greenery. It offers a profound sense of relief and celebration, with the towering silhouette of Kibo visible one last time in the distance, often glowing under the soft light of a Kilimanjaro sunset.
The weather at Mweka Camp is a welcome change from the freezing summit air, though it remains quite damp. As you have descended back into a region of higher humidity, heavy mist and tropical rain showers are very common, especially in the late afternoon. While daytime temperatures are mild and comfortable, the evenings can still be chilly. The air here is thick with oxygen, which often results in the best night of sleep trekkers have experienced since the beginning of the expedition.

Because the trail from here to the gate can be notoriously slippery and muddy, we recommend doing a final gear check to ensure your waterproof layers are accessible for the morning.
